State Theatre of Ithaca brings the class
One of our newest clients, the State Theatre of Ithaca, is one humdinger of a fancy place. The theatre, the last remaining cinema and vaudeville place in Ithaca, New York (a place once teeming with them), is almost 100 years old and is still standing beautifully strong. It’s the premiere music venue in the Ithaca area and hosts a bevy of national and local acts selected to delight.
We’re lucky enough to have recently nabbed them as a new client, and were even MORE thrilled they allowed us to build them a fancy new website!

Please welcome the State Theatre to our friendly roster of awesome venues, hardworking promoters, stellar venues, and fantastic festivals! Check out their events, learn more about their awesome theatre building and it’s history, and don’t forget to stop by the State Theatre’s Facebook and Twitter pages to tell them how much you love their new website!

Oh Mr. John A…. a new member of the 3rd floor Event Programming department but his warm coziness has already won him a place in our hearts! Funny and genteel, this guy is a winner x 10. He wears neat sneaks, digs classic cars, and is always ready to wow you with a bit of wit! Say hello to the one… the only… JOHN A.!
1) What do you do at Front Gate Tickets?
As an Event Programmer, I build tours, performances, and festival information onto our website.
2) What are some bands that you’re really digging right now?
The latest albums from Tame Impala and Deerhunter have been spending a lot of time on my Spotify queue. Black Moth Super Rainbow is definitely a favorite. Also Youth Lagoon, Beaches, Alt-J, Death Grips, and Holydrug Couple. With some Michael Jackson and Phil Collins sprinkled in for good measure. (Good choices! – Shrie S.)
3) What’s the best show you’ve ever seen?
If all is going well, this updates regularly and is usually parallel to the bands I’m currently listening to. In Austin, we always have a wonderful opportunity to catch really amazing shows. My first time seeing Tame Impala and Deerhunter recently kind of blew my mind. And that Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds show during SXSW totally restored my faith in evil! Was also able to catch the Watch The Throne tour in Houston that was amazing as well.
4) What’s your absolute fave movie or book and why?
I’m a really big film dork, so it’s tough to narrow it down to one! “The Big Lebowski” comes to mind as one obvious choice. It’s just such an entertaining film and endlessly quote-able. But, really anything from the Coen Brothers, Quentin Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Richard Linklater, PT Anderson and Duplass Brothers. (Double whammy on the movie choices… excellent! – Shrie S.)

5) If you could hang out with one band/artist or music industry mogul who would it be?
A music industry mogul that has always been interesting to me is Rick Rubin. If I had to choose an artist it would definitely be Tom Waits.
6) Would you care about sharing an interesting tidbit about yourself?
As a second generation musician, I’m active in the local Austin music scene, have toured the US as a full-time resident of a tour bus, and performed and toured in Europe. I’m all OVER tha place.
Now prepare to get your groove on with some John A.-approved sounds! He put together this fancy, schmancy, get-down style playlist for your listening pleasure:

SXSW 2013 Faves
Hopefully we all made it through this years SXSW Music Festival safely and in one piece! There were a few bands we witnessed that we just couldn’t stop talking about. Below are some short reviews and a Spotify playlist so you all can get a feel for exactly how great these bands were. Even better if you were able to make it to one of their shows and witness them for yourself. We would love to hear about your 2013 SXSW experience on Facebook and Twitter!
Oddfellows
Gracing Austin’s SXSW presence from Lafayette, Louisiana was a phenomenal band called the Oddfellows. Their rockin’ energy on stage was so intriguing the crowd couldn’t help but get up and dance to the deep south blues-influenced tunes. You could feel their passion for music flowing from the lead singer’s deep voice, awe-inspring keyboardist, and the talented accompanying guitar, bass, and drums. Let’s just say next time these guys are playing anywhere near Austin you should definitely be there.

Bonaparte
Out of the many artists that I witnessed at this years SXSW the Berlin based band Bonaparte is the one that made the biggest impression. From the lead singer Tobias Jundt’s bright pink hair and ability to rock the entire house with only his voice and guitar to his bad ass lady sidekick, also known as one of the “divas,” who came out on stage with each song in an array of different costumes. Not only were they visually striking but they had the musical talent to back it up. I’m still shaking the glitter off that the diva poured all over the crowd. Unfortunately the rest of the Bonaparte crew was not at this show but they still killed it!

John Wayne Bro
Straight outta Cali these guys certainly know how to do rock and roll justice. I believe their website bio says it perfectly: “We are more of a gang than a band.” Their bad boys impression mixed with pure rock ‘n’ roll that you just can’t help but shake your moneymaker to sure did make for an awesome show. John Wayne Bro had the crowd moving and shaking throughout the entire set and they didn’t let up on the rockin’ for one second.

Profilin’ : Mary H.

Mary Hale aka Murry, Hale Mary, or Mj. Call her whichever one tickles your fancy. Down to the basics of Mary: marketing intern at Front Gate, music business student at ACC, hat aficionado, entrepreneur, animal lover, planner, and dreamer.
1) What do you do at Front Gate Tickets?
Learn. A whole lot! Being an intern with little experience leaves plenty of room for knowledge and growth. Thanks to the uninhibited guidance of Shrie Spangler and the rest of the Front Gate crew I have learned how to comfortably navigate through many aspects of marketing and social media. Front Gate has me writing blogs, tweeting, Facebooking (yes, that’s a word), promoting shows, and helping plan awesome parties.
2) What are some bands that you’re really digging right now?
My guilty pleasure playlist, that I jam way too often, consists mainly of really bad 90′s music but we won’t get too into that. Most recently it’s a whole lot of SPOON, SPOON, and more SPOON! Can’t listen to them enough lately. Other artists that put a pep in my step include The Kooks, Mason Jennings, The XX, Rodriguez, The Weeks, The Lumineers and an array of local talent like Jack Wilson, The Bipolar Bears, Shakey Graves, Luke Walker, DB Rouse, and Whiskey Shivers. Check out these artists on the Spotify playlist below, link directly to the local artists by clicking their name, or go straight to Spotify and start a playlist of your own!
3) What’s the best show you’ve ever seen?
Where to start! Don’t believe I can pinpoint it to just one show. However, to save you guys some time I can certainly narrow it down to just a few that are permanently stuck in my good times flashbacks. Considering the amount of times I have seen them live and they have never failed to leave me drenched in sweat with a huge smile from rockin’ my face off is Pepper. The energy they bring to the stage makes you forget about “the real world” for a while and lose yourself in the music. Not to mention the copious amounts of dancing, or in my case jumping around like a fool. My favorite show of theirs was when they played at Stubb’s a few years back. Yesod Williams threw his drum stick to the crowd which of course turned into a huge wrestling match and I defeated them all to walk away with Yesod’s drumstick. Best moment ever! Another great one to mention was Brandi Carlile when she played at Austin City Limits back in 2011. She inspired and uplifted the entire crowd with her original words of wisdom and absolutely beautiful singing voice. Nobody in that crowd left without a feeling of empowerment. Which is what truly amazing talent should do!

4) What’s your absolute fave movie or book and why?
Easy answer. Anchorman! Not only for the reason that it has the worlds funniest man, Will Ferrell, as the star but the fact that after watching it my entire body aches from laughing so hard. Side note: I can recite the entire movie dialogue, mostly in order, from memory. Try me.
5) If you could hang out with one band/artist or music industry mogul who would it be?
The first woman in the history of the recording industry to gain the CEO title of a popular record label. And that would be Sylvia Rhone! It took her twenty years but she worked her way up to that title from starting as a secretary at Buddha Records. Her passion for music, determination, and perseverance are all traits that make Sylvia Rhone the most bad ass women in the music industry.
6) Would you care about sharing an interesting tidbit about yourself?
Well the fact that the majority of my family has an awesome artistic ability, that somehow got left out of my gene pool, leaves out any hobbies like painting or drawing but I do love scrapbookin’! Which is good considering the thousands of pictures I have piled up in shoe boxes. From gifts to personal photo albums I love creating a story through the years with different pictures and designs all from my own little mind.
Quick shout out to my puppy love Murphy and his best friend Willow. Who can’t love these cuties?!
