In the first few months of 2012 we’ve seen a rash of insanely good new releases… here are a few of the latest and greatest to whet your musical appetite!

M. Ward – “A Wasteland Companion”, April 10

M. Ward’s carefully placed voice and interlocking use of language is pristine on this record, his eighth solo offering. His lyrics always fascinate, unencumbered by fuzzy guitar or overridden drums here, laid out like a storybook. The bits of found sound like a clinking piano, creaking door or the punchy jangle of percussion lend a bit of real life to this smoothly produced album. As always, he borrows little snippets, as if from a skipping radio dial, of music from decades before; southern blues, lo-fi rock, lilting pop. Peppered with better-than-usual Zooey Deschanel chorus coos, “A Wasteland Companion” is a surprisingly breezy and satisfying record, nodding fiercely to American dirt rock, smooth 60s R&B and jaunty indie.

The Black Seeds – “Dust and Dirt”, April 10

This eight member dub afrobeat outfit has been around since 1998 but hasn’t put out a proper album since 2008′s “Solid Ground”. With their newest album just out on Easy Star, they have taken chill to a whole other level. The base of their sound is essentially reggae, which has been morphed/harangued and all around brutalized in the past by less-than-reverent utilizers, but sounds fresh and pleasantly infectious here. Intricate and interlacing keyboards and precise percussion provide the backdrop for samples of jazz, trip-hop and downtempo amid the groovin’ dub background.

Schoolboy Q – “Habits and Contradictions”, January 14

Schoolboy Q has had an interesting life… born in Germany, grew up in LA, joined gangs and sold a LOT of Oxycontin. He’s been AROUND. And while “Habits and Contradictions” is a filthy-mouthed rap album and gritty as all get-out, the beat is oh so salacious. Seductive saxophones make a surprising appearance (very Morphine-esque) in “There He Go” and new fave A$AP Rocky steps in on the supremely catchy “Hands On The Wheel”. This album is moody and dark, laced with the intense and emotional flow of Schoolboy Q, fettered only by the electro-introduced interlude skits so prevalent in hip hop. His rhymes are quick-witted and tempo-pushing, strange at times but irresistibly compelling.

On Wednesday, Chicago’s own Lollapalooza announced the lineup for this year’s music fest that’s chock full of rock, EDM, hip-hop, and indie favorites.  It’s sure to be a hit with any music fan trekking to the festival this summer.

Headlining this year are Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Black Keys, a reunited (and much anticipated show by) Black Sabbath, and Jack White.

For the first time in festival history, electronic music has become an important player of Lolla with main stage headliners AVICII, Justice, Bassnectar, and Kaskade.

It can be hard to find a movie with a soundtrack that is as powerful, if not more memorable, than the film itself. Here at Front Gate Tickets, we’ve compiled some of our favorite soundtracks of equally genius films.  Don’t forget to check out our Pinterest Board  which features some highlights from the list!

The most frequent film on our list of favorites is Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction”, whose soundtrack is filled with American rock and roll, surf music, pop and soul. The film is considered one of the most influential American movies of the 1990s, and the soundtrack does not disappoint with undeniable hits like Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” and Urge Overkill’s cover of Neil Diamond’s “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon.” (My husband and I did a swing dance to the Chuck Berry song at our wedding! – Shrie S.)

This film, which tied for most favorite with “Pulp Fiction” is Cameron Crowe’s “Almost Famous,” whose soundtrack won a Grammy in 2001 for Best Compilation Soundtrack.  The album is chock full of  tunes from the late 60s early 70s, plus original songs for the film performed by stars Billy Crudup, Jason Lee and the rest of the fictional band Stillwater.  The film also features over 30 more snippets of songs that are not on the soundtrack, but the 17 included definitely paint the picture of the Oscar winning screenplay.

“Drive,” the 2011 crime thriller, also has a soundtrack that is high in the ranks of the Front Gate Ticket’s team.  Most of the songs are ethereal electronic-pop that was composed by Cliff Martinez, drummer of Red Hot Chili Peppers.  After you see this film, you realize that the retro, synthesized pop music plays a vital role in portraying the intensity of the movie.  The album also features French electronic musician Kavinsky and Desire, based out of Portland and Montreal.

The 1998 comedy-drama “Rushmore,” which sparked the careers of Jason Schwartzman and director Wes Anderson, has a soundtrack as quirky as the film itself. The album is comprised of artists of the British Invasion of the 60s including the Kinks, The Who and Cat Stevens. Also included are original scores by regular Anderson collaborator Mark Mothersbaugh (cofounder of Devo), who has scored most of Wes Anderson’s movies since.

Another movie to appear a couple of times in the favorite soundtracks of Front Gate is the 1998 British/ American drama “Velvet Goldmine.”  The film tells the story of a glam rock pop star of the 1970s, and is based mainly on David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust. Although Bowie refused to have his music featured in the film, the soundtrack features other glam rock and glam-influenced bands from the past and present.  Plus, covers of glam songs are performed under the names Venus in Furs and Wylde Ratttz, features artists like Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Ron Asheton (The Stooges), and Mike Watt (Minutemen).
