Soundtracks: more than just music

It can be hard to find a movie with a soundtrack that is as powerful, if not more memorable, than the film itself. Here at Front Gate Tickets, we’ve compiled some of our favorite soundtracks of equally genius films.  Don’t forget to check out our Pinterest Board  which features some highlights from the list!

Pulp FictionThe most frequent film on our list of favorites is Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction”, whose soundtrack is filled with American rock and roll, surf music, pop and soul. The film is considered one of the most influential American movies of the 1990s, and the soundtrack does not disappoint with undeniable hits like Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” and Urge Overkill’s cover of Neil Diamond’s “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon.” (My husband and I did a swing dance to the Chuck Berry song at our wedding! – Shrie S.)

Almost Famous

This film, which tied for most favorite with “Pulp Fiction” is Cameron Crowe’s “Almost Famous,” whose soundtrack won a Grammy in 2001 for Best Compilation Soundtrack.  The album is chock full of  tunes from the late 60s early 70s, plus original songs for the film performed by stars Billy Crudup, Jason Lee and the rest of the fictional band Stillwater.  The film also features over 30 more snippets of songs that are not on the soundtrack, but the 17 included definitely paint the picture of the Oscar winning screenplay.

Drive“Drive,” the 2011 crime thriller, also has a soundtrack that is high in the ranks of the Front Gate Ticket’s team.  Most of the songs are ethereal electronic-pop that was composed by Cliff Martinez, drummer of Red Hot Chili Peppers.  After you see this film, you realize that the retro, synthesized pop music plays a vital role in portraying the intensity of the movie.  The album also features French electronic musician Kavinsky and Desire, based out of Portland and Montreal.

RushmoreThe 1998 comedy-drama “Rushmore,” which sparked the careers of Jason Schwartzman and director Wes Anderson, has a soundtrack as quirky as the film itself. The album is comprised of artists of the British Invasion of the 60s including the Kinks, The Who and Cat Stevens. Also included are original scores by regular Anderson collaborator Mark Mothersbaugh (cofounder of Devo), who has scored most of Wes Anderson’s movies since.

Velvet Goldmine

Another movie to appear a couple of times in the favorite soundtracks of Front Gate is the 1998 British/ American drama “Velvet Goldmine.”  The film tells the story of a glam rock pop star of the 1970s, and is based mainly on David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust. Although Bowie refused to have his music featured in the film, the soundtrack features other glam rock and glam-influenced bands from the past and present.  Plus, covers of glam songs are performed under the names Venus in Furs and Wylde Ratttz, features artists like Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Ron Asheton (The Stooges), and Mike Watt (Minutemen).

Fun. at Warehouse Live Review

fun.

Tuesday night, I trekked down to my native Houston to see one of my favorite bands fun. perform a sold out show at Warehouse Live. Fun. is an indie pop supergroup, featuring Nate (formerly of The Format), Andrew (formerly of Anathallo) and Jack (my personal favorite) who is currently the frontman of Steel Train. I had never seen Warehouse Live, one of my favorite Houston venues, so packed! I was worried that this was due to the recent success of their youthful ballad “We are Young,” which was featured on Glee and in a Chevy commercial . But I was happy to see that most of the crowd passionately sang along to every song, old and new.

I arrived as the opening band Avalanche City took the stage. I thoroughly enjoyed their set, especially the creepily beautiful violin prevalent in many of their songs. Avalanche City is a folk band from Auckland, New Zealand and I found myself dancing along while in line at the merch table to get my exclusive fun. and Revel & Riot t-shirt. “The Streets” and “Love Love Love”, from their new EP, are highly recommended tracks if you’re just delving into the band’s sound.

Avalanche City

Fun. took the stage to a rowdy, rambunctious crowd and opened with “One Foot” from their latest album Some Nights. I love the uniqueness of Nate’ voice, but the album is so full of auto-tuned vocals that I wasn’t sure what the songs would sound like sans digitization. The rawness of his voice live was SO much better than on the album. Jack’s guitar solos were aggressive and bold, and so much more powerful than the latest album features. The show continued with songs from Some Nights and their 2009 release Aim and Ignite. A few of my favorites of the night were “At Least I’m Not As Sad (As I Used to Be),” “It Gets Better,” and my most recent favorite “Some Nights.” Of course “We Are Young” was a crowd favorite, and the mood of Warehouse Live was transformed into mass frenzy  when the first notes played. At Nate’s request, we belted the background “Na-na-nas” with wholehearted spirit while he pleaded “Carry me home tonight.”

Nate of fun.

Between stories about a wandering crawfish and asking what day of the week it was, the band would humbly pause and smile in disbelief at the massive roaring crowd. It was cool to see a band with such sudden mainstream success still be in awe of a devoted audience.

fun. stage

All in all, fun.’s performance exceeded my expectations. This was one of the rowdiest, most jam-packed concerts that I have been to and it was a sweaty, rocking, ridiculously good time.

Turkey Day Listening

You get together with the fam, cook up a big bird, gorge on cheesy casseroles and sweet, sticky desserts and perhaps watch a little pigskin… this incredible day of awesomeness is called THANKSGIVING.

In the spirit of Turkey Day (or Tofurkey Day or Lasagna Day.,. or WHATEVER you eat on this day) we’ve put together a few little ditties we like to call our… Turkey Day Listening Playlist.

Listen, marvel at the songs specifically curated for your eager ears and share it with your friends! Share it with your Mom and Pop, that guy on the corner that asks for beer money and your creepy landlord cat lady!

Ohio Players – “Jive Turkey”
Thanksgiving – “Welcome Nowhere”
Drive-By Truckers – “The Thanksgiving Filter”
Johnny Cash – “Thanks A Lot”
Tom Waits – “November”
John Lennon – “Cold Turkey”
Jefferson Airplane – “Wild Turkey”
Belle & Sebastian – “Family Tree”
The Ruby Suns – “Cranberry”
Beck – “Nicotine and Gravy”
Ian Brown – “The Gravy Train” Nightmares on Wax remix
Sister Sledge – “We Are Family”

Halloweeny

“To be or not to be”… While Hamlet would be a pretty rad costume, I doubt your friends would recognize you as the esteemed prince and not the drunken, trust fund-sanctified ‘back-to-school’ conqueror (and who cares if they did?). But hey, don’t let that deter your dreams of impressing all your buds with a costume for the ages (or more appropriately, the weekend). Wanna ensure that your costume is a smashing success this All Hallows’ Eve? Here are some outfit inspiration ideas centered on everyone’s FAVE topic around here: music.

Robert Plant
Some say he’s the greatest front man to ever grace the stage; some say he should’ve worn more clothes (or should have at least covered some of that chest hair spillage). Either way, portraying Plant circa-1970 will undoubtedly raise eyebrows amidst of a gaggle of ghouls and gals. Now don’t go busting out off-key Led Zeppelin renditions to every poor soul within earshot, but if you have the physique to pull of this character of characters, we urge you to “Ramble On”!

Particulars:

  • Curly wig
  • Tight blue jeans
  • Necklace (think vintage)
  • Retro long sleeve shirt (unbuttoned, see below)
  • Chest hair (a must!)

Rick Astley
If you have ever been “Rickrolled” (which more or less includes every online user), you’re definitely familiar with the genuine ginger, Rick Astley. While his angelic sound never took off (screw you, Huey Lewis and the News), his presence lingers in our hearts and minds to this day. Part your hair and get ready to administer a little “rickrolling” yourself!

Particulars:

  • Red Wig
  • Blazer
  • Pleated Khaki pants
  • Colorful polo (horizontal stripes)
  • Amplified sound

TLC (T-Boz, Left Eye or Chilli)
In the endless pursuit for a suitable mate, so many took on the “No Scrubs” mantra, made popular by 90s RnB act TLC. When these three hit the scene, we didn’t know how to respond, but hoped they would show pity on us lesser beings. With spunk, charm and wit, they taught us not to compromise and to take charge of our own lives (cue the tears!). To immortalize their ever-influential career, grab a couple of sultry shirtless fellas and rock the original girl band style (sorry Destiny’s Child)!

Particulars:

  • Colorful sports bra (accentuated with sequins, glitter, etc.)
  • Baggy pants (see above)
  • Beauty accessories (hairspray, nail polish, etc.)
  • Stilettos (Pumps. In. The. Club.)

Okay, maybe our costume ideas aren’t the BEST you’ve ever heard, but we hope this at least kickstarts your costume creativity with a little musical musing. Now, go forth and pillage your neighborhood Goodwill/Salvation Army! We’ll leave you with some sounds that are sure to put your in the Halloween spirit…
