Free Week in Austin

Hey showgoers, party people and live music gurus… Free Week is about to begin! Free Week is a fabulous Austin tradition that runs the first week of January each year. A big handful of participating venues put on rad nightly shows featuring local Austin mainstays. It’s like a mini music festival, but FREE.

Austin Free Week is the perfect opportunity to scope some local bands and talent that you’ve been meaning to check out. Some highlights of the upcoming Free Week are: The Rocketboys, Bad Sports, Whiskey Shivers, Mike Wiebe, Mike and the Moonpies, Guns of Navarone, Frank Smith, Daniel Francis Doyle, Grand Champeen, The Nouns, Golden Boys, Octopus Project, Markov, Brownout and more!

After you stuff your face with holiday fixin’s, leave Grandma at home to snooze and come out to the Free Week party!

Budos Band Headlining Mardi Gras on Red River!

Budos Band is bringing their fusion of jazz, deep funk and Afro-beat back to Austin to headline Mardi Gras on Red River! The ten-member band (up to thirteen at times) that is self-described as “Afro-Soul,” a term and sound which – in a 2007 interview – baritone saxophone player Jared Tankel elucidates as, being drawn from Ethiopian music the band had been listening to that had a soul undercurrent to it, which the band then “sprinkled a little bit of sweet 60′s stuff on top” of.

The Budos Band is made up of members of other famous groups such as Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Antibalas, and Menahan Street Band.  They sold out the Mohawk last time they were in Austin – so get your tickets now before they are gone!

Pavement Announces Tour with Stubb’s Date

This fall Pavement will hit the road again after their sold out summer tour. The band announced their reunion with shows at SummerStage shows last fall and has added more dates before and after the initially announced reunion shows. Pavement will play Stubb’s September 28 with tickets going on sale Friday, 6/18 at 10am right here.

The band has come to the forefront of the indie music scene with their reunion tour, and although only one of their songs has ever reached the Billboard Top 10, they are universally regarded as one of the most influential indie rock bands in recent history (probably much thanks goes to their modest commercial ‘success’ for this). Their albums have received universal critical acclaim, scoring placement on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and Pitchfork’s Top 100 Albums of the 1990s charts as well as many other critical accolades. Don’t miss your chance to catch a seminal indie act this fall at Stubb’s!

James Murphy and LCD Soundsystem at Stubb’s – Definitely Not Losing Their Edge

Last night Austin played host to a dance party for the ages, as both LCD Soundsystem and Miike Snow descended on the city. I am going to focus on LCDs show for this however, because well…I was there. Yes, that was the first of several, hopefully many, LCD song references in this review. We arrived early to catch Holy Ghost, a DFA label mate of LCD Soundsystem, who are on their first live tour ever. The fact that these guys had not done this whole “live show” thing before was not evident in the least, and they were a great warm up for the night.

A light rain was falling, and the humidity and heat were sweltering to the point that by the time LCD took the stage most everyone already had a good sweat going. The opening track ‘Us vs. Them’ set the tone for the night, sending the crowd where I was standing into a frenzy that I had not seen at an outdoor show in some time. The energy was absolutely electric. The band tore through a set that was sure to please any LCD fan, generously pulling material from all three of the band’s albums.

The shift in momentum that occurred from the pounding beats and screaming fans on ‘Daft Punk is Playing at My House’ to the next song ‘All My Friends’ showcased perfectly the exceptional balance that LCD has achieved in their catalog. Some of the people there may have been worried that this would be the last time they could catch these guys in action, but James made the comment that they would be back touring in support of this album, playing songs that they have not had the chance to play before, and doing it all until someone made a Facebook group begging them to retire (I would not recommend this as you will have an angry throng of die hard LCD fans after you if you do so).

If you were there, then you know that this was a show that you will not soon forget. You know that this show had it all. And when James belted out ‘where are your friends tonight? If I could see all my friends tonight’ all he had to do was look straight ahead, because he had over 2000 friends right there singing it back to him. I could go on about how epic every song ended up being, but really if you were there you know. I was there, and LCD Soundsystem is definitely not losing its edge.

Setlist:

  1. Us v Them
  2. Drunk Girls
  3. Yr City’s a Sucker
  4. Pow Pow
  5. Daft Punk Is Playing At My House
  6. All My Friends
  7. I Can Change
  8. Tribulations
  9. Movement
  10. Yeah

ENCORE

  2. Losing My Edge

Chromeo Announces World Tour With Stops in Austin and at Lollapalooza!

I have talked to a number of people who have no clue who Chromeo is, and this is a real travesty. I’m not saying that they should be pushing out songs and playing for crowds like someone with the awe inspiring talent of Justin Bieber or the Jonas Brothers, but seriously these guys have a niche audience and you should probably get in on this dance party. The band has released two studio albums, 2004s In Control and 2007s Fancy Footwork, both of which are consistently in my playlist.

They are currently polishing off work on their third studio album, Business Casual, and are celebrating by throwing a nationwide party, also known as a tour. The Business Casual Tour Runs from June 11 with the band appearing at Bonnaroo to the end of August with a date at the Hollywood Bowl with Chemical Brothers and YACHT. What a lineup. However, if you are not going to be present at either of those shows, then you should definitely check out the band at one (or more) of their other dates, particularly at Stubb’s or Lollapalooza!

Tickets for the Stubb’s date are on sale here and Lollapalooza tickets here.

Complete listings for the tour can be found here.

Also, check out a couple of videos from the band below. One is for their newest track “Night by Night” and the other is from the band’s appearance on Yo Gabba Gabba! Enjoy.

LCD Soundsystem Announce North American Tour

Dance rockers LCD Soundsystem have announced a string of North American tour dates that will take them from their hometown of New York to Manchester, Tennessee for a performance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival. In March, James Murphy announced via the LCD Soundsystem website that the band was releasing their highly anticipated new album in May. He followed this up by revealing the new album art for the upcoming release, and now the band has announced a string of North American tour dates in support of This is Happening, the new record from LCD.

The band is also doing a series of videos (see below) that offer a bit of insight into the recording process of the new record. Looks fun to me! Here are all the dates in their full glory complete with a date at Stubb’s that goes on sale this week! Follow us on Twitter and stay tuned on Facebook for the link to buy tickets to the show.

Robert Plant Embarks on US Tour With a Stop at Stubb’s in Austin!

Robert Plant has confirmed plans to embark on a 12-city North American tour this summer with three stops in Texas, including one at Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheater. This tour will feature some special talent in the form of a new band whose members include Patty Griffin, Darrel Scott, Byron House, Marco Giovini and Buddy Miller.

If that doesn’t get your mouth watering, then you may just want to go back to listening to your Justin Bieber album. The band will play material from the new Rounder album on the tour that will kick off July 13 in Memphis, TN. Stay tuned for news of the Stubb’s date on sale. Tickets will be available through stubbs.frontgatetickets.com starting March 31. I plan to post a link on Facebook and Twitter that day as a reminder, so just rest easy. And yes, I know that is a photo of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, not this new band, but I just really like it ok?!

Muse Live Video from SXSW

In case you missed the Muse show at Stubb’s during SXSW, which I imagine most of us did, here is some high quality footage of the show. If you have not seen Muse play live before, then please get your act together. That is all I have to say about that. Check out the video.
