THE BEST OF ACL 2016

ACL
With the lineup about to drop, and 3-Day tickets about to go one sale for the Austin City Limits Music Festival – we can’t help but reminisce on last year’s highlights:

Cage the Elephant

This alt-rock band put on one of the most high-energy sets of the weekend. The lead singer, Matt Schultz, couldn’t stay still; he jumped from speaker to speaker while on stage, as well as launching himself into the audience. The most notable part of the performance came when the band played its feel-good hit Cigarette Daydreams. Every person in the audience knew the words and was singing along, and fittingly a vibrant rainbow appeared during just this song, and disappeared soon afterwards – creating an unforgettable, almost magical moment everyone at the show shared.

JAY JANNER / AMERICAN-STATESMAN

Radiohead

Drawing in an audience of both young and old, Radiohead’s Friday headlining spot was well deserved. Anyone who got to experience this two-hour set by these british rock icons should feel lucky. They played songs from their entire discography; ranging from the classic “No Surprises” from OK Computer, to “Burn the Witch” from their most recent album, A Moon Shaped Pool. The accompanying light show enhanced the feelings that the songs already conveyed – holding the audience’s attention for the full show. They were the perfect headliner, and put on one of the best shows of the weekend.

Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick hadn’t been to ACL since 2013 – and so much had changed in his career in those three years before returning at the 2016 festival. While before, he had a few well-known songs, by the time 2016 came around, he was one of the most anticipated performers and headliners of the entire festival. Thousands upon thousands of attendees flocked to his stage during his prime spot as a Saturday headliner. He played old and new tracks, appeasing both new and long-time fans of his music. His high-energy set proved to fans and critics alike, that he deserves his recognition as one of Hip-Hop’s most prominent artists. Which big-name rapper will ACL book this year?

Mumford & Sons

A great choice to close the weekend –  Mumford & Sons’ music ranges from banjo heavy folk-pop to genuine rock. Mumford & Son’s played a show which brought together thousands of exhausted festival-goers, and managed to keep the energy high. The lead singer, Marcus Mumford ran through the crown nearer to the front, jumped around stage, and belted out notes with intense emotion. Their universally loved sound along with bright lights kept even the people who sat on the edges of their audience, engaged. They played their biggest, and most promising tracks for an audience eager to listen – ACL you did it right again.
