Ranger Dave wants YOU to join him in celebrating 10 YEARS of Outside Lands. Are you in?
This August 11th – 13th, Golden Gate Park will hold thousands of die-hard Outside Landers for it’s 10 and biggest year yet and tickets are ON SALE NOW. This year’s fest boasts HUGE names including Metallica, The Who, Gorillaz, Lorde, A Tribe Called Quest, Alt-J, Queens of the Stoneage, Above & Beyond, Fleet Foxes, Empire of the Sun, The Avett Brothers, Belle and Sebastian, Solange & many many more!
Outside Lands is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, which means this will be the biggest and best festival yet. The first round of tickets are ON SALE NOW for all the Eager Beavers anxious about getting to this year’s festival!
To commemorate ten noteworthy years of this festival, here are a few of what we have deemed to be the best moments throughout the festival’s history:
Radiohead attracted massive crowds as the headliners of the first ever Outside Lands festival. They played an incredible set of 22 songs, which lasted over two hours. Radiohead brought together what seemed like every attendee of the entire festival, and gave Outside Lands an opening to become of of California’s foremost music and arts festivals.
2012: Jack White
Although Jack White did have a place on the official 2012 lineup, he surprised fans with an intimate set in the nearby woods in the back of the festival grounds at the 2014 festival. Those lucky fans who were at the right place at the right time will remember this set as a once-in-a-linetime opportunity.
2014: Kanye West
Kanye brought his narcissistic, eccentric persona to Outside Lands 2014. From cutting off his own songs, to asking the crowd to make “dance circles”, to playing a single song three times (Blood On the Leaves), Kanye left behind a legacy as one of Outside Lands’ best headliners.
2014: The Killers
The Killers closed the 2014 festival with anthems such as “Mr. Brightside” and “When You Were Young”. Their powerful music enforced festival-goers’ sense of togetherness through music. This band has been a continuing legacy, and their Outside Lands set only furthered their musical strength.
2016: Radiohead (again)
Unsurprisingly, Radiohead has made multiple appearances on this list. With a perfect combination of both old and new songs, the band knew how to get the crowd going. The flashing light show allowed the crowd to not only hear the songs, but to see them. This intense performance by one of music’s most respected names represented that this festival valued its classic roots – from 2008 to 2016, Radiohead represents what Outside Lands is all about.
We asked our favorite Bay Area local (AKA our intern, Caroline) what we should be “hella” stoked for at this year’s Outside Lands. Take a walk down her memory lane and read on for the inside scoop:
Ok, clearly I am biased, but look at that beautiful view of the Bay Bridge! How can you even try to top a music festival that gives you the bay as your ultimate pregame spot? You just can’t. Plus, San Francisco’s weather is gorgeous during festival season, so forget about any blistering heat and humid discomfort. It’s our idea of a perfect festival. All you need is a light jacket.
Food – crucial to all human life and even more so to the complete Outside Lands experience. Unlike other festivals, OSL really does it big on the festival feasting. Prime example pictured above: The Donut Cheeseburger. As soon as you enter the pearly gates of Outside Lands, you’re immediately surrounded by food trucks and booths galore – but the real adventure comes in visiting all of the other “lands”. 2015 featured Choco Lands, Bacon Lands, Cheese Lands. Word of the wise: pace yourself when visiting Wine Lands and Beer Lands. If you find yourself enjoying either of those too much, you can take a walk over to, you guessed it, Sober Lands.
When I asked my fellow OSL vets what the best parts about the festival were, there was an overwhelming love for the people you meet there. Of course we would all be lost if we couldn’t share these memories with our best friends, but the vast majority of the people you will meet as you aggressively push yourself to the front for a snap will be cool about it.
I was pumped to head back to Outside Lands before the lineup even came out (I am proud to say that I’m an Eager Beaver), but after this morning’s announcement I literally cannot contain myself. The headliners appeal to fans in every genre and across generations. Legendary names like Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem, Lionel Richie, Lana Del Ray, J. Cole, Duran Duran, and Zedd will grace those massive stages this August.
Now we just have to count down the days until we get to party with Ranger Dave!
